Address search

You can use 'Address search' to search for and display a specific location on the map.

The search facility is not case sensitive, so you may use upper or lower case. To search for a location, enter details into one or more of the following boxes:

  • Building name/no: to minimise the search results you should also enter a street name or postcode in the relevant box.
  • Street name: to minimise the number of search results you should type in the full name of the street and also enter a building name/number or postcode in the relevant box.
  • Postcode: enter the full postcode eg M27 5AW.

After entering details in one or more of the boxes, click on the 'Search' button. The results of the search will be displayed on screen in the box below. Click on the required address in the list in order to display the map at that location. A yellow dot on the map will identify the address you selected.

To remove all the text from the search boxes at any time, click on the 'Clear current' button. Please note: If you have already zoomed to a specific location ? the map window will remain at this location until you either complete a new search or move around the map using the map tools or other functions.

You can also use the 'Clear current' button to remove the address text from the map.

About the property

This function is only available once you have searched for a specific location using the 'Address search' and zoomed to that location on the map.

You can use this function to find out useful information about the property. It will automatically display:

  • The name of the ward in which the property is situated
  • The day the bins will be emptied
  • A link to the Ward Councillors web page
  • Nearby schools, post offices and recycling centres

To find this information for a different property, you will need to go back to the 'Address search' page and complete a new search.

Find my nearest

This function is only available once you have searched for a specific location using the 'Address search' and zoomed to that location on the map.

You can use this function to find the nearest:

  • Car parks
  • Community centres
  • Libraries
  • Police stations
  • Post offices
  • Rail stations
  • Recycling sites
  • Schools
  • Town centres

Once you have selected an option from the 'Find my nearest' drop down box you can:

  • Select the search distance (or leave at 'Any' to find all within 10km)
  • Select the distance units that will be displayed for the results

Now click on the 'Search' button. The results will be displayed in the box below, together with the distance from the location you specified in the 'Address search'. Click on the name of the one you are interested in to display it on the map. The map will refresh to show both the original address you selected (identified by a yellow circle) and the location of the feature (identified also by a yellow circle).

You may continue to use this function to find other features for your chosen address. However, to 'Find the nearest' in relation to another property, you will need to go back to the 'Address search' screen and complete a new search.

Using map layers

The map layer showing the Salford City Council boundary is displayed automatically when you visit this web site.

You can use 'Map layers' to add information to the map. As you add layers, coloured images are added to the Ordnance Survey base maps to indicate the geographical position of those features.

To add map layers to the base mapping, you must first click on the 'Map layers' link in the left hand menu. A list of layers will then appear on the left hand side of the screen. These layers are organised in themes (categories).

Select a theme by clicking on the '+' sign beside it to reveal the list of associated map layers. For example, clicking on the '+' beside Planning will allow you to see all layers that have a Planning theme, such as Salford Greenspace. Each layer has a legend beside it that will show the colour that has been used to represent that layer on the map.

To add a layer, click the check box next to your chosen layer. You can add as many layers as want from any of the themes. Once you have selected all the layers you wish to view, click on the 'refresh map' button to update the map.

To remove a layer, simply uncheck the box next to the layer. You can remove as many layers as you want at any one time. Then click on the 'refresh map' button to update the map.

To find out information about a feature on the map, click the Get information icon, Get information icon Once you have clicked the map further information will be presented in the 'Feature information' table.

This online mapping service does not retain a history of previous visits to the site. Therefore, each time you visit the site, you will need to select the map layers that you want to view.

Printing a map

Please note there are certain restrictions that apply to printing maps:

  • Maps should not be printed unless Salford City Council map layers are visible on the map due to Ordnance Survey Licence Agreement restrictions.
  • You must not print a map that just shows Ordnance Survey base mapping.
  • A single print is permitted for your own personal use.
  • These maps are for identification purposes only and must not be used for formal documentation. You cannot use this Online Mapping Service to produce printed maps for the purpose of submitting a planning application.
  • You can use the 'Print map' function to print a map in PDF format.

First select your paper size and map scale from the options displayed on screen and then enter a title for the print (optional).

Now click on the 'Create PDF icon' and a PDF will be created.

Click on the 'Download the map as a PDF' and you will then be prompted for a location to save the file on your own computer.

Alternatively, enter an email address and a message for the recipient and email the PDF to yourself or someone else by clicking on the 'Email a PDF' icon.
